  • Who can apply for accommodation at the hostel?
    Any full-time student enrolled at a tertiary education institution in the Bellville area of Cape Town is welcome to apply. The Durban Road hostel is ideally located near Eduvos and the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB), making it a convenient option for students studying at these campuses. Please note that while we welcome a wide range of students, we are not currently NSFAS-accredited and therefore may not be a suitable option for students relying on NSFAS funding.
  • How do I apply?
    To apply, complete the online application form at https://portal.studyandstay.co.za. Please fill in all fields carefully, upload all required documents, and pay the registration fee. Once we’ve received your application and payment, we’ll begin processing your submission.
  • When and where do I check in?
    The hostels opens in mid-January each year. Students may check in any time before their academic year begins, so it’s important to confirm your course start date with your institution. Check-ins take place at the hostel premises, Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Weekend check-ins can be arranged by special request.   • What types of rooms are available?
    MAREE STREET (Mixed – Male & Female Students): Studio Rooms (En-suite): 4 beds Single Rooms (Shared Bathrooms): 15 beds Double Rooms (Shared Bathrooms): 30 beds DURBAN ROAD (Female Students Only): Single Rooms (Shared Bathrooms): 3 beds Double Rooms (Shared Bathrooms): 24 beds
  • Can I view a room?
    Yes. You can view photos of our rooms on the website. If you'd like to see a room in person, please email Fiona at fiona@studyandstay.co.za to book an appointment. Viewings are by appointment only and take place Monday to Thursday, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • What fees are payable before I occupy my room?
    Before you can occupy your room, the following fees must be paid: Application fee: R1,250.00 (non-refundable) Room holding fee / deposit: R4,000.00 (secures your spot) Breakage deposit: R750.00 (refundable at the end of your stay, subject to inspection) These fees must be paid in full before check-in
  • Will my deposit and breakage fee be refunded?
    The R4,000.00 deposit is a room holding fee that forms part of your total annual room fee. It is not refundable, as it is credited toward your room fee. The R750.00 breakage deposit is refundable at the end of your stay, provided the room is left in a clean and undamaged condition.
  • What happens if I need to cancel my application?
    Our accommodation model is based on full-year room bookings, and it can be difficult to fill vacancies once the academic year has begun. As such, we have a strict cancellation policy: If you cancel before moving in, a cancellation penalty of 25% of the annual room fee will apply. If you cancel after moving in, you will remain liable for the full room fee for the year. However, we will actively try to find a replacement for your room. If we succeed in placing another student, you will no longer be liable for the remaining amount from the date the replacement takes over.
  • Can I pay monthly and how does the instalments work?
    Yes, we offer a monthly payment option. It is a 10 Instalment Payments Plan where the first instalment due 1 February, final instalment due 1 November. This plan are designed to make payments more manageable over the course of the year. Please note that no discounts apply when choosing a monthly payment option. Please note that your contract is for one year at a fixed annual fee. The instalment option is a credit arrangement between you and us, allowing you to pay off the annual fee over time.
  • What should I bring?
    We provide fully furnished bedrooms, as well as fully equipped kitchens, dining rooms, and lounges (complete with DStv). You’ll need to bring: Your own bedding (and your favourite blanky from grandma, of course) Your own crockery and cutlery Two padlocks if you'd like to secure your lockable kitchen cupboards Clearly marked Tupperware for use in the shared fridges and freezers This helps keep things organised and ensures your Romany Creams and condensed milk stay safe!
  • Can I bring my own fridge?
    Yes, Personal bar fridges require approval and incur a R60/month electricity fee. Height 750cm x Width 47cm – 130 Litres.
  • Is there a laundry?
    Yes, there are pre-paid laundry facilities available.
  • Can I leave my belongings in my room during the holidays?
    Yes, in most cases. If you are a returning tenant, you may leave your personal belongings in your room over the December holidays. If you are not returning, your room must be cleared when you move out. Please note that if maintenance work is scheduled during the breaks, we may ask you to vacate your room. In such cases, we’ll provide a designated storage area for your belongings. While we take reasonable care, Study & Stay cannot accept liability for any loss or damage to items left in rooms or in storage during the holidays.
  • Can I bring my pet to the hostel?
    No, unfortunately not, not even a fish.
  • Is there DSTV?
    Yes.
  • Will there be an incoming inspection?
    Yes, and an outgoing inspection will also be conducted. We may carry out additional inspections during the year, but these will be clearly communicated in advance.
  • Can I request to swap rooms?
    Yes, you may request a room swap by submitting a written motivation via email to the Director of Student Affairs. Please note that room changes are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed. Send your request to Fiona at fiona@studyandstay.co.za.
  • Are visitors allowed to stay overnight?
    No, overnight visitors are not allowed under any circumstances. While students are welcome to have friends over during the day, no guests may stay the night. This policy is in place to ensure the safety, comfort, and privacy of all residents, and to respect the shared living environment. It also helps us manage security effectively.
  • Can I smoke in my room?
    No, smoking is strictly prohibited inside all rooms and indoor areas. The house is fitted with smoke detectors as part of fire safety regulations, and smoking indoors will trigger them. This rule helps protect the health and safety of all residents, prevents fire hazards, and ensures a clean living environment. Smoking is only permitted outside in designated areas.
  • Do you provide meals?
    No (self catering)
  • Is there a curfew?
    No, there is no set curfew. However, we do like to know where students are, to help ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing. Quiet hours begin at 10:00 PM on weekdays to maintain a peaceful environment for all residents. If you're heading out, it's always helpful to let the hostel mother or a friend know where you're going and whether you'll be returning the same day.
  • Do you provide transport?
    Yes to certain institutions only at an extra cost per month.
  • Is there parking available?
    Yes. Secure parking is available at Maree Street, while Durban Road offers open off-street parking. There is no charge for parking, but spaces are limited and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who wish to park on the property must register their vehicle in advance and request a parking spot during the application or check-in process.
